“FALL RISK”

I have decided three things since I got home from the hospital after surgery to repair my separated pelvis: I will leave my yellow FALL RISK bracelet on until I am “healed.” When I look at it, I am reminded to take it slowly and easily. As soon as I can, I will run as … Continue reading

Home sweet home

I am home safe and sound. I’m exhausted and I’m sore. But I have my new wheels, my transfer board, my commode with the drop-down arms, a loving husband, a smiling son and my doting mother with me at home. Tomorrow I will call to schedule appointments with endocrinology (for that bone density test) and … Continue reading

Transferable skills

Today I learned how to transfer myself from the bed to a wheelchair using a long, skinny plastic board as a bridge. I did this three times successfully, with very little help actually. But it was exhausting. For 12 weeks my pelvis can not carry any weight at all. Those 12 weeks will give the … Continue reading

My selfless sister

My selfless sister

My younger sister and I are very different people. I am five-and-a-half years older and we have lived very different lives. But our bond is stronger than any pair of siblings I have ever known. When I could’t get out of bed two days after delivering my son, she packed up her three-month-old, arranged for … Continue reading

Proactive healing

So, we stopped by Whole Foods and he got a supplement. (I stayed in the car with the little guy.) I told my mom about the … Continue reading

New wheels?

We learned our lesson yesterday and when we got to the hospital today Jeremy got me a wheelchair. It was HUGE for me — like the one I used at the airport last week. I know the standard lend-a-chair needs to be one-size-fits-all, but it made it difficult for me to push the wheels. My … Continue reading

A taste of what is to come

A taste of what is to come

We are in Omaha spending time with family this weekend. It is an important time for my husband’s family to be together. It is an incredible, humorous and deeply loving family that I consider myself lucky to be a part of. If you pray, please include them all. The visit also is giving me a … Continue reading

Even more answers of the day

Even more answers of the day

We’ve got so many plates spinning and my mind is racing to keep up with everything. I decided to call KU Med to find someone who could answer my logistics questions so I can stop thinking about at least this small list: Where do we check in when we arrive for surgery? My mom told … Continue reading

Something to look forward to

Something to look forward to

Surgery is scheduled. We’ll check in at KU Med Center at 5:30 a.m. on Aug. 24.
Part of me hates that I still have to wait that much longer. But it was necessary. Dr. Sojka said we couldn’t schedule the surgery until I had a place to go home to. We live on the third floor right now. Continue reading
